President's Award for Safety Improvement

View Historical Winners of the President's Award for Safety Improvement.

This award is presented to companies achieving a 25% or greater reduction in the total recordable incident rates as compared to the average of the total recordable incident rates for the three previous years and have not had an OSHA reportable incident.

Purpose: This award is designed to recognize a company for improving their safety performance. It will be achieved on each company's ability to demonstrate continuous improvement by reducing the number of recordable accidents (differing from the current Company Awards that are a competition against other companies).

  • Will increase safety awareness within GPA
  • Requires historical data and therefore will provide an extra incentive for all member companies to submit data annually rather than selectively
  • Uses their own company performance as a benchmark, allowing each company to set specific goals
  • Some years we may have multiple recipients (some years there may be no companies that qualify)
  • Was implemented for calendar year 1997
  • Intended to be a prestigious award and difficult to achieve. The award recipients should be recognized annually at the Presidents Luncheon (Annual Convention).

Eligibility: To qualify for the award, a company must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a GPA member
  • Have annually submitted safety statistics to GPA for the immediate three previous years
  • If available, new member companies may provide GPA with historical data
  • Achieve a 25% (this number will be evaluated and adjusted by the Safety Committee as needed) or greater reduction in the total cases incident rate for the year as compared to the average of the total cases incident rate for the three immediate previous years (column J in GPA's report form)
  • 2nd + 3rd + 4th year incident rate divided by 3 = Average Incident Rate
  • Qualifying Year Incident Rate less than or equal to Average Incident Rate X 25%

Issuance: Award recipients will be recognized as follows:

  • Recipients of the President's Award for Safety Improvement will be recognized by the GPA President at the GPA Convention. Each will receive a plaque that will indicate the award type, year of qualification, and be signed by GPA's President and Safety Committee Chairman. Winners will be contacted and given the opportunity to purchase additional plaques or flags.
