GPA Research
Advancing the midstream industry
The GPA research program has been a successful model for leveraged research and has helped provide the basic data needed to increase the efficiency and environmental performance of gas processing facilities. Data from the program have been used in all facets of gas processing and treating design and operation, with an estimated value worth more than 10 times its $14 million investment. The value has been delivered through technical reports, incorporation into design tools, and inclusion in the GPSA Engineering Data Book/CD Set .The GPA research program has evolved according to the following guiding principles:
- Focus on areas of importance to the gas processing industry
- Direct research toward tractable problems
- Demonstrate economic value to the industry
- Avoid areas of proprietary work where potential conflicts with others' intellectual property may exist
As results are obtained, designated GPA committee members scrutinize the results and recommend adjustments to the program if required.
The current annual research budget is $500,000. Projects are proposed by members of the subgroups of Technical Section F based on their knowledge of problems/shortcomings of data facing the industry. The proposed projects are voted on by member companies through a balloting system. See GPA's 2010 Cooperative Research brochure for more information about the research program and an overview of past and current research projects.Research projects may be funded over the course of a few years to collect the required data. In some cases, data are "donated" to the GPA by member companies that no longer consider the data to be proprietary. Outside organizations also contribute (money, or in-kind) to the research program, including:
American Petroleum Institute (API)
Gas Process Suppliers Association (GPSA)
Gas Technology Institute (GTI)
Propane Education and Research Council (PERC)
Propane Gas Association of Canada (PGAC)
National Propane Gas Association (NPGA)One result of all of the work over the years is a collection of 200 research reports and 31 technical publications. All reports have been scanned electronically, and the titles (with authorship) have been compiled into a searchable database that is available to GPA members.
The success of the program is directly attributable to the members of the two Technical Section F sub-groups who oversee the projects. These people are highly knowledgeable of the problems faced by the industry and of the availability (or lack) of data to help resolve those problems. Their unique in depth knowledge - both theoretical and practical - of data and process makes them proficient in the guidance and evaluation of the research. In addition to the individual knowledge each brings, the synergistic interchange of ideas among the committee participants results in excellent supervision and assessment of the ongoing research, ensuring that GPA member companies receive the maximum benefit for the funds they are contributing.
